40 Years Ago July10th 1985 the Rainbow Warrior Was Bombed
(Music from The Thin Red Line, similar to how the Marshallese sang)
40 years ago Greenpeace lost a great photographer and I lost a good friend as the French bombed and sank our beloved Rainbow Warrior in New Zealand. I filmed a portion of our campaign that year to move over one hundred Marshall Islanders off their nuclear poisoned island, Rongelap, to a safer island about 80 miles to the east. I left the crew in June that year to return to my young family in San Francisco.
Fernando Pereira, my roommate, was killed in the blast. We, Greenpeace, were on a campaign to bring awareness to the world of the dangers of nuclear testing and the horrors of nuclear war. It was perhaps the greatest campaign Greenpeace ever launched and I am forever proud to have played a small part in it.
If you care to look a little deeper into why we were there, Adam Horowitz does a terrific job of detailing the reasons. (Used some of the film I shot of our campaign.)
